Follow the path of radioactive waste on a walk around the site. What steps does radioactive waste go through before it is finally disposed of?
'The path of waste' is only available for groups, with a guide.
In a nutshell:
- A visit lasts 2.5 hours
- A visit costs €200 per group of up to 25 people
- Two groups can start at the same time (maximum 50 people)
- Booking is mandatory, at least two months in advance
Practical information
Accessibility
The walk covers several kilometres across the site. The visitor gallery at the storage building is only accessible via stairs. The visit is therefore not suitable for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility.
Booking
You need to book 'The Journey of Waste' at least two months in advance using the booking form for groups and schools. You can suggest a date on the form. Please note: visits always start at 1 p.m. or 2.30 p.m.
Price
'The Path of Waste' costs €200 per group of up to 25 people. This price includes a guide, a security guard on site and the administration regarding the safety guidelines.
Safety
List of participants
- Access to the site is personal. At least one month in advance, you must provide us with a completed list of participants, including the name, address and national registration number of each visitor (max. 25 visitors per group). You will receive a copy to fill in after you have booked your visit.
- This list is binding: anyone not on the list will not be allowed to access to the site. Group leaders and teachers must also be included on the list.
- Write each name as it appears on the visitor's e-ID. Do not use abbreviations or nicknames.
A bit like at the airport
- Make sure you bring your e-ID with you on the day of your visit. It will be checked before you are granted access to the site. You will not be allowed in without your identity card.
- After the identity check, you will pass through a metal detector. You therefore need to leave your personal belongings in the lockers or school cloakroom at Tabloo or in the lockers in the entrance building. It's a bit like a security check at an airport: you have to leave your bag, mobile phone, keys, wallet, etc. behind. You can keep your shoes and belt on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I join a group as an individual visitor?
No, for the time being, the 'The Journey of Waste' tour can only be booked by groups and schools. A group consists of a maximum of 25 people and a tour costs €200, regardless of the size of the group.
Is there a minimum size for a group?
No, the size of the group does not matter. The cost of the visit is the same.
Can two groups do the walk at the same time?
Unfortunately, this is not possible. In English we only have one guide available, so two groups cannot start the walk at the same time.
I have a pacemaker or prosthesis: do I need to let you know?
Yes, after you have booked a visit, we will send you a list of names to fill in. If you are not allowed to go through the metal detector for medical reasons, you can let us know at that time (and at the start of the visit). We will, of course, handle this information discretely.
Is there a minimum age for participants?
No, in principle there is no minimum age. We believe that 'The Journey of Waste' is interesting and can be easily understood by individuals aged 14 and above (2nd year of secondary education).
